My love for the physicality of paint led me to the use of encaustics - the of layering molten wax and pigment fused onto a sub- strata.
This method of painting enjoyed new prominence in the United States when Jasper Johns painted the American Flag entirely in Encaustics in the 1960's .
The Johns' painting was featured in the first comprehensive contemporary exhibition of encaustic art in America at the Montclair Museum of Art in 1999.
The historic museum show "Waxing Poetic;Encaustic Art in America" included work by Joan Giordano .
Giordano's work was also included in the Exhibition catalogue and in the book that followed: “The Art of Encaustic Painting” by Joanne Mattera.
